Well today has been a rather busy day - not exactly much time to mosey around the dalvik-vm. It was election day and everything seemed to be extra hectic. Extra traffic everywhere, people rushing around at work so they could leave early, or make up for coming in late. I didn’t seem to have too much problem getting to the polls and voting, though there was a small line when I arrived. Should be an interesting election!

Yesterdays post about the update seems to be a dead end currently. Unlike normal signed apk and jars used, this one requires the specific key used by HTC for signing the firmware. This means we cannot currently edit anything within it unless we get the key leaked, as a brute-force of it would take far too long.

On a note more related to the main content of this blog, I have not yet finished my full explanation of the patch-me test I’ve previously posted. I figured I’d give people a few more days to check it out, and also see if it is accepted by crackmes.de where someone from TEAM RESURRECTiON has posted it.

On a somewhat related note to TEAM RESURRECTiON, it appears that they have successfully been the first scene team to release working cracks and keygens for android applications. Hopefully any information from this blog didn’t directly contribute to helping them do that, though there is always bound to be some collateral damage. A note to developers who are wishing to keep their code safe; As of right now it does not look like there is a way to successfully extract apk files that are only available via the android market. So if you have a key algorithm within your program you should definitely not release the regular apk file on the net, otherwise teams might start cracking everything. It’s only a matter of time before all the teams follow suit as RES did.

A lighter note - to see that crack/keygen teams are taking notice in android must be a good sign for the android developers. While their programs might be getting cracked — they are at least getting attention of people and being requested for cracks! Sort of the ying and yang of that situation I guess…

Only a matter of time before someone makes protectors for the dex files I guess! Which gets me thinking…

Hah! Until tomorrow, and yes, I promise the patchme example will be up soon. Though there is enough information provided already for successfully doing it.
